Music Program

Music is an integral part of life at First Universalist, both in Sunday morning services and other activities. Under the direction of our professional staff, dozens of members and friends participate in ensembles or as soloists. Guest artists make occasional appearances. You will experience a wide range of music, old and new. For instance, in honor of our Sesquicentennial (1859-2009), the choir debuted a masterwork commissioned from David Evan Thomas to the text of "One Light."

Professional Leadership

John Jensen serves as Music Director and pianist. John has a Masters degree from the University of Southern California and was an Artist in Residence at Grinnell College for many years before moving to the Twin Cities. He is well-known as a solo performer, ensemble player, accompanist and recording artist. John is equally at home with the classical repertoire and modern jazz.

Janice Hunton serves as Choral Director. A graduate of Indiana University and a member of the Dale Warland Singers for several years, Janice is head of the music department at the Perpich Center for Arts Education (i.e. the Minnesota state arts high school).

Music Committee

In collaboration with the music director, the Music Committee works to plan and execute special music programs, encourage involvement of the congregation (including youth), maintain a focus on music as an integral part of the First Universalist community, and provide outreach to the broader community through music programming.
