Becoming a Member

Who May Join?
Membership in First Universalist is open to anyone age 14 or older.

How Do You Prepare for Membership?
Those new to Unitarian Universalism are encouraged to participate in the "New U" class that is offered several times each year. This class, led by one of the ministers, will examine what it means to be UU, explore some history of our denomination and First Universalist, and lead attendees through an exercise in which they explore and share their own spiritual journeys.  This will be a great opportunity to learn about how you can start to become engaged in the life of the church. To register, please call the church office at 612-825-1701.

Another opportunity to become more familiar with Unitarian-Universalism and this church in particular are the "What We're About" sessions. They are held the third Sunday of each month at 10:00 and noon (i.e. following the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services). This is a brief overview of what Unitarian Universalists believe, and what makes us different from other denominations in America. We meet in the Sanctuary, near the chancel. No sign up is necessary. First-time visitors and those just wanting to learn "what we're about," are welcome!

How Does One Become a Member?
You must sign a membership application (available from the church office or by clicking here for a "pdf" version) and being officially voted on by the Board of Trustees at its monthly meeting. Making a pledge by itself does not make you an official member. If you are not sure if you are officially a member,  contact the office (612-825-1701) or consult the member directory; an asterisk (*) by your name indicates that you are a member. New members are formally introduced at one of several services each year. Participation in the ceremony is encouraged but not required.

What Rights Do Members Have?
Only members may vote on congregational issues including:

  • Approval of the annual budget
  • Election of Board members and other lay leaders
  • Special resolutions
  • Calling ministers
