Reproductive Rights: Sacred Choices Campaign

Highlights July 1 ’07 to January 1 ‘08

The RRSC Campaign engages UUs in working collectively for reproductive justice in partnership with the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC) and other community partners.

  1. Organized two Faith & Choice groups
  • Fall group led by Connie Diercks and Cathy Apostle that helped 4 UU women reflect and clarify their views about choice as a religious issue.
  • First co-ed Faith and Choice group scheduled for February 9-March 3, 2008.

  1. Created visibility for the RRSC campaign locally and nationally —
  • Sara McMullen interviewed for RCRC Voice for Choice about her Faith & Choice experience
  • Cathy Apostle was selected NARAL Volunteer of the Month
  • Kelli Clement talked about Choice at U. of M. Law School in September and gave several sermons on Choice to UU congregations
  • Photo of RRSC designed and constructed quilt featured in Nov./Dec. issue of the UU Women’s Federation newsletter
  1. Strengthened ties with community partners.
  • Working with MUUSJA organizer, Ralph Wyman, to engage more UU congregations in RRSC campaign.
  • Recruiting RRSC campaign leader for MUUSJA Board.
  • Strengthened RCRC via Jody Beresford’s participation on RCRC board. Jody helped organize a fall fundraising banquet—attended by 16 UUs, netting $4000, including $830 from the raffle of a quilt made of choice T-shirts by AUW women and proceeds from a silent auction which 6 AUW members contributed items to.
  1. Creating linkages with First U youth, parents, and others at First U
  • RRSC campaign funded youth, Abbie McMillan, for sexuality education advocacy  training in 2007, leading to her selection as a national 2008 SEAT trainer.
  • Collaborating with First U youth, adult advisors and staff on their social justice project: Comprehensive  Sexuality Education

Sponsored LSFD staff member and young women to attend RCRC Faith and Freedom
                   Banquet

UU Reproductive Rights: Sacred Choices Campaign 2008

We work to build UU and public support for reproductive rights and comprehensive sexuality education as a sacred choice, enabling all women to act on their conscience in matters related to their reproductive health. The campaign, started by the Association of Universalist Women (AUW) of First Universalist Church in Minneapolis, is a working group of the Minnesota UU Social Justice Alliance (MUUSJA).

Here are 5 ways you can help…
