Together We Are Strong…

More than ever, the world calls for justice. To sustain the work of justice, however we define it, we must first seek wellsprings of support in a trusted group of friends. Helping to create such friendship groups is the work of AUW.

For the last two years, nearly one hundred women at First Universalist have participated in AUW Friendship Groups. In the name of spiritual hospitality, this year, AUW will continue to form new groups and support existing groups as they continue explore new opportunities for growth and service.

A Friendship Group is made up of about seven women eager to get to know each other. Typically, the group meets in one another’s home to share a meal, although some groups meet at local cafes, if it is more convenient. Each member takes a turn as hostess and provides a simple meal of soup, bread, salad and dessert. A Gathering begins with opening words, the lighting of the chalice, and a check-in. It closes with a poem, a heartfelt reading, or the song, “Go Now in Peace.” In between, the conversation may explore a Sunday sermon, journeys on a spiritual path, a personal struggle, or a topic of choice suggested by the group. Over time, the group’s conversation may lead in many directions, but eventually shared stories weave a web of friendship. After seven meetings the group agrees to continue or conclude, knowing members will still remain connected in friendship.
